One of Derryfield’s most well-known citizens was John Stark. Stark lived in his family’s home near the Amoskeag Falls along with his wife and their children. In addition to giving New Hampshire its state motto, “Live Free or Die,” John Stark is also known for his impressive military history in which he rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Continental Army. During the fight for American independence, Stark became one of New Hampshire’s greatest Revolutionary War heroes, leading troops to victory during the battles of Bunker Hill and Bennington.
